Making Sewing Accessible
blumengrat SIA creates educational pathways for people discovering textile crafts
We're not just teaching people to sew — we're connecting them to a craft that's both practical and deeply satisfying. Whether you're picking up a sewing machine for the first time or looking to master advanced techniques, we've got structured materials that work. Our approach starts simple. We focus on fundamental skills: threading, basic stitches, understanding fabric. Then we build from there. You'll work through beginner sewing machine projects that teach real techniques without overwhelming you. But we don't stop at machine sewing. We're passionate about upcycling old clothing into something useful and beautiful. That old denim jacket? It becomes a sturdy tote bag. Worn-out t-shirts transform into quilting squares. It's sustainable, creative, and honestly kind of addictive once you start.
What Guides Our Work
Three core commitments shape everything we do
Latvian Heritage
We celebrate local producers. Our linen sourcing focuses on authentic Latvian makers who've been crafting quality materials for generations. Supporting local means better materials and stronger community connections.
Sustainable Crafting
Upcycling isn't trendy for us — it's central to our mission. We teach people to extend the life of clothing they already own. Less waste, more creativity, better for everyone. Your closet becomes your material supply.
Real Community
Šūšanas workshops in Rīga and Ventspils aren't just classes — they're gathering spaces. We've built a genuine community where beginners learn from experienced sewers, and everyone celebrates each other's progress.

How We Teach
A structured but flexible approach that respects your learning pace
Start with Fundamentals
Threading, tension control, basic stitches. We don't rush. You'll get comfortable with your machine and understand what's happening at every step. These skills are everything — they unlock everything else.
Guided Projects
Beginner sewing machine projects with real structure. Pillowcases. Simple bags. Aprons. Each project teaches specific techniques. You're building a portfolio of completed work and genuine skill, not just practicing in the air.
Explore Materials
We introduce you to Latvian linen and quality fabrics. You'll understand fiber differences, how materials behave, which fabrics work for different projects. This knowledge transforms you from someone who sews to someone who really understands textiles.
Upcycling & Home Textiles
Once you've got foundation skills, you're ready for upcycling old clothing projects and making home textiles. Transform existing pieces. Create things for your home. This is where the craft becomes personally meaningful.
